and Europe in the fall of 2011.Ī remake of Eternal Punishment followed in 2012. After debuting in Japan in April, it was released in the U.S. That doesn't mean fans never got a chance to play the game in English. Following in the footsteps of the original Persona, a remake was released on the PlayStation Portable in 2011. The PlayStation version of Innocent Sin was never released outside of Japan. That strategy ultimately paid off with the success of the later Persona games. Rather than making multiple changes to the game to appeal to a western audience, Atlus chose to remain as true to the Japanese version of the game as possible (they did retain the names that were changed in the original game for American audiences). Combined with the fact that resources and staff were already allocated to localizing Eternal Punishment, Atlas ultimately decided against releasing Innocent Sin outside of Japan.Įternal Punishment marked a change in Atlus' localization strategy. Hitler was ultimately revealed to be the Lovecraftian demon Nyarlathotep in disguise. Resurrected by rumors that he was saved from death by the Last Battalion, Hitler was trying to create a dictatorship in Sumaru City. There were allusions to Nazism, including Adolf Hitler appearing as an enemy. In addition to fears that American audiences wouldn't get its references to Japanese culture, Atlus was also concerned that the game's potentially controversial content. The reasons why Eternal Punishment was released internationally and Innocent Sin didn't come include a change in publisher Atlus' philosophy in adapting its games for foreign audiences.Ītlus chose not to release Innocent Sin internationally because of localization issues. Eternal Punishment used the same game engine and structure as its predecessor.Īt first blush, it's odd that Eternal Punishment was given an international release when Innocent Sin wasn't given their similarities. Innocent Sin supporting character Maya Amano, a reporter for a teen magazine, became the lead character of Eternal Punishment. During the development of Innocent Sin, writer Tadashi Satomi thought its story needed another point of view besides protagonist Tatsuya Suou. Released the following year in Japan and the U.S., Persona 2: Eternal Punishment was a direct sequel to Innocent Sin that took place months after its ending. With the aid of their Personas, they battled Joker, who spread reality-warping rumors through the city. It focused on a class of high school students from the fictional Sumaru City's Seven Sisters High. A sequel to the first Persona, it had all of the hallmarks established in the first game. ![]() V0.Persona 2: Innocent Sin was released in Japan for the original PlayStation in 1999.
